Cara Giannillo is a School Intervention and Re-Entry Coordinator at Stony Brook Children’s. In addition, she is also the Research Coordinator for the Pediatric Oncology Survivorship Clinic.  Her educational background includes a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Human Relations and a Master of Science in Elementary Education.  Cara spent ten years working as a Social Worker where she advocated for children in foster care at their CSE and 504 meetings.  She took that experience into the classroom and taught both 5 and 6 grade, where she continued to be an advocate for her students, always searching for ways to improve their educational outcomes.

At Stony Brook, Cara has used her experience as a teacher to forge positive working relationships with school personnel and community members.  She is a reassuring and comforting presence to the patients and families, especially during contentious school meetings.  Yet she is confident and firm in her interactions with the occasionally uncooperative or unenlightened school administrator.

Cara is a relatively new member to APHOES, yet from the beginning she took an active role in the Editorial Committee.  Cara has spent countless hours over the past year developing content, formatting, and designing the APHOES quarterly newsletter.  Her commitment and dedication to this endeavor was exceptional.  She recognized the importance of sharing news with APHOES members and keeping them connected. “THE BRIDGE” Newsletter has been well received and has made a positive impact on the APHOES organization and its members.

The committee is excited to see what the future holds for Cara as she becomes more and more involved in APHOES, and we are delighted to present her with this year’s Nan Songer Distinguished Member Award.
