Thanks to all who joined us for the

2015 Joint APHOES and AECMN National Conference

APHOES joined with AECMN for a second joint national conference April 30 - May 1, 2015.  Duke Children’s Hospital and the Durham Public Schools Hospital School in Durham, NC hosted the conference.

Approximately 125 professionals from the two organizations joined together to address educational needs and discover methods for improving school outcomes for the pediatric hematology-oncology population and patients with various chronic medical conditions.  Members of both organizations shared ideas, research and interventions that could improve the educational landscape for students with medical needs.

Conference participants enjoyed a presentation from the keynote speaker, Jo Mascorro, MEd, an independent education consultant from San Antonio, TX.  She shared effective communication strategies, especially for frustrating or difficult daily experiences with patients and schools.

On April 29, 2015 APHOES again held a preconference working group meeting for new and veteran members. This all-day event allowed committees and workgroup members to spend time setting the agenda for the year and working toward established goals.

Additionally, the joint APHOES/AECMN Legislative Committee members had an opportunity to meet in a larger group to continue work toward legislative initiatives.  The joint APHOES/AECMN task force also had the opportunity to meet in order to review and make recommendations about a potential organizational merger.

Overall, participants enjoyed the opportunity to network, reconnect, and brainstorm ways to facilitate positive academic outcomes for the patients we serve.
